Trump maakte de opmerkelijke constatering, die nauwelijks enige media-aandacht kreeg, tijdens een recente verkiezingsbijeenkomst in Noord-Carolina, meldt Mondoweiss.
Tijdens zijn toespraak becommentarieerde de president de bewering dat de militaire aanwezigheid van de VS in het Midden-Oosten te wijten is aan “olie” – een argument dat in de linkse vleugel gangbaar was in een tijd waarin links nog kritisch was over Amerikaanse oorlogsprojecten.
In feite zijn de Verenigde Staten zelfvoorzienend als het gaat om energie, aldus Trump.
“Het punt is dat we niet in het Midden-Oosten hoeven te zijn, afgezien van het feit dat we Israël willen beschermen. We zijn erg aardig geweest voor Israël. Buiten dat hoeven we niet in het Midden-Oosten te zijn”, zei de president.
Hij benadrukte dat er inderdaad een tijd was dat de Verenigde Staten wanhopig behoefte hadden aan olie.
“Maar die hebben we niet meer nodig. We hebben meer dan hen, is dat niet goed? Na jaren van wederopbouw van andere landen zijn we eindelijk bezig met de wederopbouw van ons eigen land.”
