Op een klein cruiseschip onder Nederlandse vlag op de Atlantische Oceaan, de MV Hondius, met 149 passagiers en bemanningsleden aan boord, vertrok op 1 april 2026 uit Ushuaia. Ushuaia, gelegen in Vuurland, Argentinië, wordt algemeen erkend als de meest zuidelijke stad. Tijdens de reis van het schip naar het noorden werden zeven passagiers ziek en stierven er drie.
Het schip deed eerst Sint-Helena aan, waar een Zwitserse passagier werd geëvacueerd en naar Zürich werd gevlogen. Hij ligt nu in het ziekenhuis met symptomen van het hantavirus. Sint-Helena is een afgelegen vulkanisch eiland in de Zuid-Atlantische Oceaan, tussen de zuidwestkust van Afrika (Angola/Namibië) en Zuid-Amerika.

Het triest-grappige is dat Britse “wetenschappers” —waarschijnlijk in samenwerking met andere westerse wetenschappers— sinds augustus 2023 een vaccin ontwikkelen tegen een hypothetische, onbekende ziekteverwekker die wordt aangeduid als “Ziekte X,” en waarvan “deskundigen vrezen dat deze de volgende wereldwijde pandemie zou kunnen veroorzaken.”
Hoe kun je een vaccin ontwikkelen tegen een ziekte die nog niet bestaat en onbekend is?

In 2011 raakten meer dan 300 flesjes met hantavirus, Hendra-virus en Lyssavirus zoek uit het Queensland Public Health Virology Laboratory in Australië. Dat was toen. Hoewel het Pandemieverdrag (PT) tijdens de jaarvergadering van de WHO in 2025 is goedgekeurd, moet de cruciale bijlage over toegang tot en verdeling van voordelen van pathogenen (PABS) – essentieel voor de uitvoering van het verdrag – nog worden goedgekeurd.
Er wordt ook niet verwacht dat deze tijdens de 79e Wereldgezondheidsvergadering (WHA79), gepland voor 18–23 mei 2026, zal worden aangenomen. Recente onderhandelingen hebben geen consensus opgeleverd, waardoor de lidstaten genoodzaakt waren de besprekingen te verlengen tot na de oorspronkelijke deadline.
